3 tips to choose your therapist

Take it from me, it can be confusing to choose the right person to support you through life’s toughest challenges. Let me help clear things up with you!

Number 1: Give them a call

I truly believe finding the right therapist starts with noticing how you feel when you talk with them over the phone. it can give you a sense of who they are, and what it would be like to work with them. This also gives you a chance to ask any important questions like :

  • Have you worked with people with my issue?

  • What are your fees, and do you offer sliding scale?

  • Are your fees covered by insurance?

  • Where did you go to school, and what are your credentials?

  • Have they ever been in therapy?

Number 2: Ask people you know

The best way to understand what people may like, or dislike about a therapist is by asking. Ask family or friends if they like their therapist, and if they do, ask them what they like. This also gives you a chance to consider a few things when you have your first session:

  • Do you feel heard when you speak?

  • How do you feel in general around them?

  • Do you like their style and approach?

You may not decide on the first appointment if they are the right fit , and it may take some time to decide, but trust your gut.

Number 3: What in the heck are all of these treatment approaches and designations? How do I know which one will fit my needs?

The truth is there is no one size fits all approach Therapy. Each therapist has their own unique skill set and treatment approaches to therapy. When you call them , ask them what approach they take and what it means. In the meantime, here is some information about social workers.
